The Nutcracker, a two-act classical ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, is one of the most well known ballets all around the world. Set on Christmas Eve in the root of a little girl’s imagination, The Nutcracker cherishes the Christmas magic and delight of the season.

As many may know, The Nutcracker is about a little girl named Marie (also referred as Clara or Masha in some versions), her nutcracker, and the Christmas magic. In the beginning of the ballet, Marie receives a special Christmas gift, the nutcracker, from her uncle, Herr Drosselmeyer, and immediately falls in love with it. That night, as she is almost asleep, mice start appearing; having their own party as the clocks strikes midnight. In all the chaos happening, the mouse queen appears and introduces Marie to the land of the sweets. Both astonished and excited, Marie enjoys the Christmas magic that is happening right in front of her eyes. Such as the Sugar Plum fairy, the Spanish, the Arabian, the Italian, Chinese, and French dancers, Marie meets many people from the magical land. The final scene finds Marie realizing that this was nothing, but the Christmas magic her nutcracker had brought her.

This year, I am very excited about my new role. I am very honored to be Marie as I know it will take countless amounts of rehearsals and hard work. I am especially looking forward to dancing in the party scene, as it is my favorite scene in the whole ballet. Such as the entrance of Herr Drosselmeyer and the fighting scene of Fritz and Marie, I love how this scene has many comical moments included, as the audience are also very entertained and engaged with dancers. The Columbine doll dance and the nutcracker soldier dance is also one of my very favorites. The party scene is such an inspiring moment to symbolize the thrills of Christmas Eve. I also absolutely love the finale when everyone comes together to dance the same combination in unison. It is such a heart-warming scene for everyone!

The Nutcracker is such a magical ballet to be performed and cherished by everyone of all ages. I am so thankful to all my teachers for giving me a chance to perform, furthermore as Marie, as this role is every little girl’s dream. I will continue to work hard to make this ballet more magical than ever.

ABA’S NUTCRACKER NIGHT

WITH ELLA

On November 5th ABA attended the World Ballet Art Competition (WBAC) in Philadelphia. This was my first competition with ABA and I was both nervous and anxious. When I walked into the theater, I was amazed at how large the stage was and the number of seats in the auditorium. Before the competition started, ABA attended a master class with the other competing ballet studios. The master class started with warmups and then we worked on the finale performance. I enjoyed learning the choreography and was excited to perform it at the competition finale.

When the master class finished, ABA students went back to the dressing room area to get ready for the competition. The competition started with solos, and I was able to watch and support my ABA friends from the wings. Everyone did such an amazing job! Ensembles were next and my heart started racing immediately. As soon as I walked out on stage it calmed down and I felt confident. It was important to me that I performed well in the three ensembles that I was a part of.

At the end of the competition, we performed the finale and received our certificates of achievement and a single rose. All of our solos and ensembles performed very well. I was proud to be a part of ABA and look forward to attending the WBAC finals in Canada.

WBAC semi-final Philadelphia was my first time performing solo pieces for both Classical and Contemporary.  I was very nervous going into the competition but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.  It is a privilege to be a part of the ABA team and our accomplishments at the WBAC Philadelphia semi finals.

After successfully competing in the semi finals, we have only two weeks to prepare for the WBAC finals in Niagara Falls, Canada.  My preparations for finals have involved reviewing videos from the WBAC semi finals and incorporating corrections from my teachers.  I am trying to improve my musicality and not sickling my feet during Cupid Variation from Don Quixote.  For Fairy of Passion from Sleeping Beauty, I need to be sharper and evoke more emotion.   Additionally for my contemporary solo, Melancholia, I need to remember to have my movements to be more precise and flowy.  For my group pieces, Happy Boots, Tarantella, and Quantum Intuition, I am working on being more unified and together so that we can look more unified on stage.

It can be a little stressful before the competition but I love the feeling of dancing for others and offering my dance to the audience.  I look forward to the WBAC Finals in Niagara Falls, Canada.

Last weekend ABA traveled to Niagara Falls Canada to attend the World Ballet Art Competition Finals. It was a wonderful experience for all the students and teachers. ABA students packed up costumes and traveled across the border, arriving Friday evening at the beautiful falls. Saturday was a busy day full of dancing. Most of the students performed two classical variations and one contemporary dance each which was a bit hectic but very exciting. In addition to all solos, the students danced eight ensemble pieces! It was a wonderful feeling at the end of the competition day, being tired and happy from dancing onstage and performing so many pieces. Sunday morning all dancers attended a ballet master class and a contemporary masterclass where everyone learned a new choreography made especially for the Gala performance. Soon after the masterclasses we learned that we would be performing 5 of our pieces in the gala. It was such an honor to be invited to perform some of our dances again. Shortly after the gala it was time for awards. It was truly such a wonderful experience to be a part of a school that showed so well in the competition. In addition to our solo and ensemble awards it was so inspiring to have a part of winning Best School Award and to make our teacher proud. Mme. Akhmedova received Best Teacher award and ABA was awarded a certificate by the Mayor of Niagara Falls City. I was very humbled to be awarded Best Choreographer for my contemporary creations. Everyone had two wonderful days filled with dancing and we made unforgettable memories together. Before we traveled home some of the students and Mme. Akhmedova were able to take a boat ride that took us around the falls. We somehow managed to not get too wet and we had a wonderful last outing before heading home to focus on our upcoming Nutcracker shows. We can’t wait for next year’s WBAC and look forward to another special experience again!

WBAC Semi Finals

WITH CHARLOTTE

My experience with the competition was amazing since I got to do two brand new pieces - Bohemian Girls and my solo contemporary piece Pesadilla. I was so excited and a bit nervous for my solo since it had been 5 years since I had last done a solo variation and it was also my first time ever doing a contemporary solo for a competition. I am looking forward to the finals in Canada as well as I am very excited for more opportunities in the future. I am very thankful for my wonderful teachers to be helping me get to the place where I am at right now and I’m very excited to keep working with them in the future.

INTO THE VARIATION

WITH ISABELLE

When I first auditioned for ABA, I was surprised by the level of detail and corrections that were given to me in just an hour.  During the first week of attending ABA’s summer intensive, I was immediately welcomed by all the very kind and friendly dancers at the academy.  Through the first classes in the summer intensive, I experienced many different styles of dance and other classes I had never considered before.  In one summer, intensive week, we would take around 2.5-3 hours of ballet in the morning.  After lunch, we would have another style of dance for 2 hours, for example: contemporary, character, or mime.  For another hour, we would take a conditioning class to improve our cardio, flexibility, and strength, or a ballet history class, which I found very interesting.  All the dancers at ABA are very talented and always hardworking.  Outside of classes, the students are very light-hearted and funny, but also very encouraging about reaching new goals.  The students are always very positive about learning new steps, even though challenging classes.  In the studio, the students are focused and determined to make improvements whether the corrections are big or small.  The work ethic of everyone in the ABA community, including the students, teachers, and parents was what set them apart from other dance studios.  The students are always pushing themselves to do better alongside encouraging teachers and supportive parents that work to make student's dreams become reality.

Right now, everyone is preparing for the Nutcracker performance on December 16.  I am looking forward to being able to perform in the event with my fellow classmates who have all been working hard to make the Nutcracker come to life.  I am so thankful to Mme. Akhmedova and her talented staff for being able to put together this event while also preparing for upcoming competitions, new dances, classes, and all the behind-the-scenes coordination needed to keep the academy running successfully and efficiently.
